The facial skeleton (viscerocranium) is the set of bones that make the face: not the braincase. Looksmaxxing’s “it’s over / bone” talk is almost entirely this mask plus how fat and lids sit on it.[1]

This page is a map. Individual bones have their own articles.

The bones the boards name

Bone What the scene is pointing at
Frontal bone / forehead Upper third, brow shelf, hairline
Zygomatic bone Cheek width, highlight, bizygomatic width
Maxilla Midface projection, nose base, upper teeth
Nasal bones Bridge; see nose
Lacrimal / ethmoid (orbital plate) Medial orbit wall — thin, not a rating target
Palatine Hard palate; palate expansion
Vomer / inferior turbinate Airway, not PSL
Mandible Jawline, chin, ramus, gonial angle
Sphenoid bone Skull base; pterygoids; spheno-occipital synchondrosis
Temporal Temple hollow, zygomatic process of the arch

Paired bones: nasal, maxilla, zygomatic, lacrimal, palatine, inferior nasal concha. Unpaired: vomer, mandible, and the frontal contribution to the brow.

What bone does not do

Chewing blocks do not grow a zygoma. Bonesmashing is injury. Adult sutures are not Play-Doh; see cranial suture and growth plate. Soft tissue (fat, lids, hair) still decides how much bone you see.
