Cortisol face is looksmaxxing slang for a puffy, rounded, “unsharp” face blamed on the stress hormone cortisol.[1] The medical sign it is borrowing is moon face (moon facies, Cushingoid facies): fat deposited on the sides of the face until it reads round, classically from prolonged glucocorticoids or Cushing's syndrome.[2]
Those two are not the same diagnosis. Cushing’s is uncommon (on the order of a few cases per million per year from tumor) and comes with a cluster: central obesity, thin limbs, striae, buffalo hump, hypertension, proximal weakness.[1] Moon face is among the most reported adverse effects of systemic glucocorticoids; it fades when the steroid is tapered or the cause is treated.[2] A salty night, poor sleep, alcohol, and ordinary facial fat also puff a face. Forum “cortisol face” is usually that, plus a hormone word.
A figurative “cortisol spike” on looksmaxxing streams is a stress-reaction joke, not endocrinology.[3]
Method
What actually debloats a face that is not Cushing’s:
- Sleep, salt, alcohol, body fat — the boring stack. See debloat, sleep, body fat.
- Steroids — if you are on glucocorticoids, that is a prescribing clinician’s problem, not a looksmaxxing protocol.
- Do not treat a round photo as Cushing’s. Diagnosis is stepwise (medication check, then urine/saliva/blood cortisol, then ACTH).[1]
This wiki's view
Lead with moon face as medicine when the cluster is present. Lead with sleep and fat when it is a Tuesday morning. Do not sell a “cortisol-lowering” stack as a jaw implant.
