Also known as facial sutures, plate fusion (slang)

A suture is a fibrous joint between skull bones. Looksmaxxing says “plates fused” here when it means you cannot expand or protract the maxilla with a gadget — not a femur growth plate. See growth plate for height.

The ones the forums name

  • Midpalatal suture — down the hard palate; palate expansion, MARPE, MSE. CBCT staging (Angelieri A–E) is how orthodontists guess whether it will split.[1]
  • Circummaxillary sutures — maxilla to neighbors (frontomaxillary, zygomaticomaxillary, pterygomaxillary). LeFort cuts some of them on purpose.
  • Cranial vault sutures (sagittal, coronal, lambdoid) — craniosynostosis if they fuse too early in infants; not a PSL drill.
  • Spheno-occipital synchondrosis — a synchondrosis (cartilage), not a suture; cranial-base growth.

Adult sutures interlock. Breaking them is orthodontics or surgery, not mewing. JawHacks-style “split the palate then protract” is a medical controversy, not a protocol on this wiki.
